Tipton Named Parks and Recreation Director
Bryan Tipton is Pierre’s new Parks and Recreation Director. He will begin the job on Wednesday, Feb 16; he replaces Tom Farnsworth who retired in January.
Tipton began his career with the City of Pierre in 2017 as the Superintendent of Hillsview Golf Course. Since being there, Tipton has installed the lake liner for the 2.4 acre lake at Hole 8, renovated 18 sand bunkers, and installed a new irrigation pump station.
“If you know Bryan, you know he brings enthusiasm and an amazing work ethic to the office,” said Mayor Steve Harding. “I can’t wait to see how he’ll shape the future of our programs here in Pierre!”
Tipton has 19 years of experience as a Superintendent of both public and private golf courses throughout the Midwest. In 1999, Tipton was named 9 Hole Superintendent of the Year by the Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of South Dakota. Additionally, he has worked for the South Dakota Dept. of Agriculture in the pesticide program.
“I’m really looking forward to this new challenge and the completion of the outdoor pool,” said Tipton. “Pierre’s a great city with amazing public green space, a very active recreation community, and a great team. This is going to be fun!”
As Parks and Recreation Director, Tipton will serve on the City’s senior staff team, oversee 17 full-time staff members, and direct all Parks, Recreation, Golf, and Cemetery operations.
Tipton holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agronomy and Business from South Dakota State University. Tipton has been a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America for 27 years and has been a Certified Golf Course Superintendent for 18 years.
