[ARCHIVED] Fireworks Safety

Using fireworks on our nation’s birthday is as American as apple pie, backyard barbecues and parades on Main Street.  However following a few common sense rules can keep you and your family safe, says Chief Ian Paul with the Pierre Fire Department. Chief Paul notes that fireworks related accidents do occur each year, however, most could be eliminated if some basic safety steps are taken.

The following are some common safety tips for using consumer fireworks in the hopes that injuries to consumers and accidental fires can be avoided this season:

  • Parents and caretakers should always closely supervise teens if they are using fireworks.
  • Parents should not allow young children to handle or use fireworks.
  • Fireworks should only be used outdoors.
  • Light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry vegetation and flammable materials.
  • Always have water ready if you are shooting fireworks.
  • Wear safety glasses whenever using fireworks.
  • Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
  • Soak spent fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor garbage can.

“Remember that in the City of Pierre there are rules on what can be used and what is illegal. A good rule to follow is if any fireworks you are using are airborne or make a loud report, they are illegal in the city of Pierre,” says Chief Ian Paul.

More information on legal fireworks (city ordinance 8-1-113) can be found at CityofPierre.org.
