Pierre Fire Rescues Dog

Shortly after 8 p.m. on March 21, 2019, the Pierre Fire Department Rescue Squad was dispatched to a report of a dog that could not get out of the river due to ice conditions.

The pet dog was in the area of the Oahe Dam, north of the marina. The pet ventured onto the frozen river where he fell through the ice. The dog could not extract himself from the open water due to ice conditions. He was approximately 20 yards off shore.

Pierre Rescue deployed a rescue squad member to retrieve the dog. The rescue member was able to extract the dog from the water, and the pet made his way back to shore.

“This time of year, we are seeing a lot of deteriorating ice conditions,” said Paula Tronvold, Pierre Fire Assistant Chief. “Thankfully the pet owners did the right thing. They called for assistance and did not try a rescue on their own.”

The dog was stuck on bad ice, partially in the water, for approximately 30 minutes and was in good health when removed.

Pierre Rescue reminds the public to call for help with ice rescues and not to attempt them on their own.

Also assisting with the rescue was Ft. Pierre Fire, Stanley County Sheriff’s Office, and South Dakota Highway Patrol.
