Water Treatment Plant Proposal: First Informational Meeting Scheduled

PIERRE, SD – People who have questions about a proposal to build a drinking water treatment plant in Pierre can get answers on Monday, March 19. That’s when the City of Pierre will hold its first of three informational meetings about the proposed project.

Last week, the Pierre City Commission heard a consultant report that recommended building a drinking water treatment plant in Pierre to remove the high mineral content currently found in Pierre’s water system. Their estimate puts the cost of the project at more than $35 million. Last week, the commission also decided that the public should decide whether or not to build the plant.

“This is a very big project to consider,” said Pierre Mayor Steve Harding. “When the public votes whether or not to build it, I want them to be well informed.”

The March 19 meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce. City staff and representatives from the consulting firm that provided the project recommendation will be on hand to answer citizen questions.

“Our goal is for this to be a very comfortable environment,” said Mayor Harding. “We want to make sure people get their questions answered and make sure we provide an environment that makes it easy to ask those questions.”

Two more public informational meetings will be scheduled in April and May. On the June primary ballot, Pierre citizens will be asked whether or not the City should build the treatment plant. For additional information, visit cityofpierre.org.
