[ARCHIVED] City Rolls out Summer Project List

2018 Project Map

The City of Pierre will invest more than $2.2 million this summer to improve its streets. It’ll also upgrade two portions of its extensive trail system and replace more than 20 blocks of water main, storm sewer and sanitary sewer.

According to Brad Palmer, City Utility Director, the most noticeable of the changes will be to the street; most of the other work is for underground utilities.

“We have some major thoroughfares that are in need of a facelift, and some others that will get completely rebuilt this summer,” said Palmer. “Almost the full length of Fourth Street, from Garfield Avenue well past the State Health Lab, will get a boost.”

Palmer said that there will also be work done to portions of Harrison Avenue, Capitol Avenue, Country Drive, Plum Drive, Governors Drive and Park Street.

The walking trail from the Missouri River car bridge to the causeway will be widened and resurfaced.  Additional benches will also be added along the pathway. The majority of this improvement is being paid for with a grant from the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks.

A private grant from The Wellmark Foundation will pay for about 50 percent of the trail upgrade near Downs Marina. There the City will reconstruct portions of the current trail, construct a new portion, add lighting, rest stops and additional security features.

Project timelines are weather dependent and will be announced as schedules become more firm. For a closer look at the project map, click here.
