[ARCHIVED] Citywide Spring Cleaning Starts This Week

Citywide Spring Cleaning Starts This Week

PIERRE, S.D. –Pierre’s citywide spring clean-up starts later this week at Hilger’s Gulch.

Wednesday morning, representatives from several state government agencies and students from Georgia Morse Middle School will join forces to clear litter and debris from the gulch, as well as Fourth Street and East Airport Road. Their efforts are all part of Pierre’s annual Go Green and Clean campaign.

The campaign is a civic pride effort designed to get the city shined up for the summer season. Each year for the last seven, dozens of volunteers and volunteer groups have painted public facilities, cleaned up flower beds, cleared litter and otherwise helped make Pierre look its best. Pierre Parks and Recreation Director Tom Farnsworth says that this year’s program is stronger than ever.

“We have more than 240 volunteers and more than 40 volunteer groups adopting projects all across the city this year,” said Farnsworth. “That’s a record number for this program.”

Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill initiated the campaign shortly after being elected in 2008 and says that the success of the program continues to amaze her.

“I’m so proud of this community,” said Mayor Gill. “Our residents and our business community are so generous with their time and their talents, and their community pride is making a very visible and very positive difference in Pierre.  Thank you!”

This year’s Go Green and Clean campaign also includes an Arbor Day tree planting seminar, a tree trimming seminar and an educational program about recycling.  For more information about Go Green and Clean, visit cityofpierre.org or contact Tom Farnsworth at 605.773.7407.
