Intern Program Offered Again
Pierre, SD –The Cities of Pierre and Fort Pierre are pleased to again offer the Student Intern Program. The program pairs Riggs and Stanley County High School students with employers in Pierre and Fort Pierre. The program is designed to provide employers with access to a local talent pool while providing young adults who will soon be entering the workforce with exposure to meaningful local career paths.
This is the second year the program has been offered. During the 2015-2016 school year, 15 students were employed through the program and eight employers hosted interns.
Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill says that the program is a workforce development effort designed to be mutually beneficial for the business community and high school students.
“Businesses benefit by not only being matched with students who have a particular interest in their business, but also through a salary subsidy for the student intern,” said Mayor Gill. “The student intern benefits through first-hand experience in their desired career field.”
Ideally, the internships result in a long-term employer-employee relationship that allows the student interns to see the ability to grow their careers locally.
Businesses interested in participating can contact Pierre City Hall at 773.7407. Students interested in participating should contact their school counselors for information about internship qualifications.
The internship program is funded through a matching grant provided by the South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development and made possible by a partnership between the Cities of Pierre, Fort Pierre, the Pierre and Stanley County schools and the local business community.
