PIERRE, S.D. – The City of Pierre is undertaking a number of projects in the next six months and needs extra help to get the work done. The city currently has more than 50 seasonal positions available within its utility, parks, recreation, cemetery and golf divisions.
With the exception of the recreation positions, all jobs require applicants to be at least 18 years old and to have a valid driver’s license. Compensation ranges from $8.75 an hour to $17 an hour depending on position and responsibilities.
Mayor Laurie Gill says a large ongoing project in the water department could use a boost from seasonal help.
“We’re in the process of modernizing all the municipal water meters in Pierre. To complete the project, staff has to literally touch every residential and commercial water meter that is connected to city water service,” said Gill. “We’d really like to wrap up this project this year, and a short-term staff surge would certainly help.”
Seasonal Water Department staff will assist with water meter upgrades and customer service. The positions pay $11 an hour and are scheduled for four ten-hour days each week. The city anticipates the positions will last for six months.
Gill went on to say that the electric department offers a unique opportunity to its seasonal employees.
“The City of Pierre is really ahead of the national curve in terms of our electrical distribution system. We’re almost entirely underground,” said Gill. “Nationwide, utilities are moving more and more of their infrastructure to underground lines. Our seasonal positions are a great way to gain experience in underground line work.”
Additional seasonal positions offered by the city include truck drivers for a number of divisions and summer recreation instructor jobs. Truck driver positions start at $15.50 an hour and require applicants to have a Commercial Driver’s License. The summer rec jobs start at $8.75 an hour and require applicants to be at least 15 years old.

The City of Pierre employs more than 150 full-time employees who administer and support seven departments including Police, Fire, Utilities, Engineering, Library, Parks and Recreation, and administrative services.
