[ARCHIVED] Property Owners Reminded to Trim Trees

Pierre, S.D. –It’s time to trim your trees.

Pierre city ordinance requires that all tree limbs be at least eight feet above the sidewalk and at least twelve feet above the street.

“By law, property owners and renters have always been responsible for the maintenance of their trees,” said Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill. “Right now, we’re paying close attention to tree maintenance because we have recently had several city and emergency response vehicles damaged by low-hanging branches.”

Within the next month, residents are encouraged to trim trees themselves or work with a contractor. After October 1, city crews will begin trimming trees that are out of compliance. Expenses will be charged to the owner or renter of the property. Charges will be based on the amount of work that needs to be done. However, people can anticipate a minimum charge of $125.

The tree trimming fee schedule as approved by the Pierre City Commission is:
• $125 minimum
• $500 an hour
• $42 for 5 minutes
• 5-minute billing increment after the initial 15 minutes

“The City really doesn’t want to be in the tree trimming business,” said Mayor Gill. “I’m hopeful Pierre citizens will take it upon themselves to trim their own branches and enhance community walkability and drivability.”

For people who plan to trim their own trees, measuring poles are available at City Hall. The poles are available for a $20 deposit. Upon return of the poles, the $20 will be refunded.
