[ARCHIVED] City Commission Replats Cemetery

Cemetery Map

The Pierre City Commission has approved a staff request to replat a small portion of Riverside cemetery.

“The minor replat straightens out a curve to create a better functioning layout for the burial sites in this area of the cemetery,” said Emeline Post, City Planner.

The impacted area is located at the southwest corner of the city-owned cemetery, just past the west entrance. The change expands the usable space of the cemetery by correcting nearly 70 plots.

“The replat gives staff a better way to measure those sites,” added Post. “The desire for the replat follows a request by a community member to purchase one of the plots in the impacted area.”

The change was previously reviewed and recommended by the City Planning Commission; the existing plats have been in place since 1988 and didn’t fully consider the topography of the area.

Riverside Cemetery, established in the late 1800s, is owned and operated by the City of Pierre. It currently has 35 acres of developed land and an additional 25 acres of undeveloped space. The cemetery averages between 70 and 75 burials each year and sells between 40 and 50 burial sites annually.
