The Pierre City Commission checked a few administrative requirements off the to-do list at their June 25 meeting.

The commission approved a motion to align the city 911 surcharge ordinance with state law.

“During the last legislative session, state lawmakers increased the statewide 911 surcharge,” said Lacey Walz, City Finance Director. “Local ordinance had a fixed rate listed; we updated it to reflect changes made at the state level.”

The surcharge is applied to monthly phone bills statewide and is utilized to support public safety communication and 911 dispatch centers throughout South Dakota. The South Dakota Department of Public Safety distributes the funding.

In separate action, the city also held a public hearing in advance of requesting financial assistance from the South Dakota Dept. of Agriculture and Natural Resources for a water main project.

The public hearing is a requirement of the state loan application process. If approved, the loan will be used to replace the water main under Euclid Avenue, and the work will be completed when the state rebuilds Euclid Avenue.
