City Approves Construction Contracts

PIERRE, S.D. – The Pierre City Commission continues to lay the groundwork for this year’s construction season. At the Feb. 18 meeting, it approved more contracts to aid 2025 street improvements.

Curb and Gutter Contract

The commission awarded the curb and gutter contract to R&W Construction, the lowest of three bidders.

The approximately $417,000 contract is for the replacement of about 40 blocks of curb and gutter.

The contract breaks the work into two parts -schedule A and schedule B - to help prioritize this season’s projects.

“Having curb and gutter that work properly is necessary for good streets,” said City Engineer Nick Waters. “It carries moisture away from the street surface and keeps it from penetrating the street and causing damage.”

Curb and gutter work will begin as soon as weather conditions allow.

Asphalt and Concrete Crushing

The City also approved a $48,000 asphalt crushing contract and $14,800 concrete crushing contract with Briggs Trucking.

“Briggs will crush the salvaged material we have stockpiled from old street surfaces,” said Josh Bible, Construction and Operations Manager. “We’ll turn around and use that recycled material to build new streets.”

The city recycles these construction materials to provide cost-savings to taxpayers and to prevent the usable material from going into the city-owned landfill.

Between the salvaged asphalt and concrete, the contract will provide more than 8,000 tons of crushed material.
