The Rawlins Library schedule is chock full in April with activities for National Library Week, after school programming, book clubs, and more! 


Rawlins Library’s Seed Catalog

Rawlins Library’s Seed Catalog is now open! Library patrons are invited to choose three seed packets to grow in their own garden. Packets are available while the supply lasts.

 

Easter Monday Freeplay Day at the Library

Monday, April 1, 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the SD Room  

Everyone’s favorite, the puppet theater, is making an appearance during this come and go program. It will also feature LEGOS, Duplo table and blocks, and board games.

 

Adult Book Club (Tuesdays) 

April 2, 9, 16, 23, & 30 at 6 p.m.

In April, the club will read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. To reserve a book or join the club, email rawlinslibrary@ci.pierre.sd.us, call 605.773.7421, or sign up in person. Water and coffee are provided. Participants must be 18 or older.

 

April Storytime at Rawlins Library (wednesdays)

April 3, 10, 17 and 24, Sessions starting at 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Join us in the South Dakota Room Wednesday mornings for stories and sing-along fun.  


After school program: what’s a total solar eclipse?

Wednesday, April 3, 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the SD Room

Learn about the upcoming total solar eclipse and other interesting solar system facts at our after school program. The total solar eclipse will pass over the United States, Mexico, and Canada on April 8. Rawlins Library will have free solar eclipse glasses available to take home for friends and family. Kids of all ages are invited to the program.

 

NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK ACTIVITIES (APRIL 7 – 13)

  • Library DVD Sale

April 6 - April 12

Support Rawlins Summer Reading program while restocking your movie Library! Between April 6 and April 12, Rawlins will host a DVD sale. Purchase a library tote bag for $5 and fill it with DVDs. Tote bags are available while supplies last. After that $5 will get you a plastic bag to fill with DVDs. Cash or check only. All proceeds go to the Summer Reading Program.

  • D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read)

April 8-12, 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

During National Library Week, Rawlins is encouraging all young readers to embrace Beverly Cleary’s campaign and gather at the library to “Drop Everything and Read” for at least 20 minutes after school each day. Cookies provided. Bring your own water bottle.

 

  • Poetry Open Mic

Saturday, April 6, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.

Rawlins Library is hosting an open mic poetry event. Share your own words or those of a piece you found powerful. Poems must be appropriate for the public. To participate, contact Rawlins Library at 605.773.7421.

  • Author Talk: Accidental Rancher

Monday, April 8, 12 p.m.

South Dakota author, Eliza Blue, will host an interactive virtual author talk about her book Accidental Rancher. The series of essays shares insights about being an urbanite who now lives in Perkins County and loves it! Registration encouraged by calling 605.773.7421.

 

  • Bath Bombs for Teens and Tweens

Monday, April 8, 3:30 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.

Teens and tweens are invited to Rawlins Library to create their very own bath bombs. All necessary materials are provided. Registration requested by calling 605.773.7421.

  • Patron Appreciation Day

Thursday, April 11, 9 a.m. – 5p.m.

Rawlins Library is celebrating its patrons. Please stop by the library for cookies and coffee during Patron Appreciation Day.

 

  • Cookie Decorating Class

Saturday, April 13, 9:30 a.m.

Sugar Coated by Sophie will host a cookie decorating class at Rawlins Library. Registration fee is $30 (cash or check) per person and registration is required at 605.773.7421.

 

Bat Appreciation Program

Wednesday, April 17, 1:00 p.m.

International Bat Day is a thing. Find out why during a presentation by the SD Discovery Center at Rawlins Library. Registration requested by calling 605.773.7421.

 

After School Program: National Kite Month

Wednesday, April 17, 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the SD Room

Kites have been used to spy on adversaries, photograph the earth, measure the weather, and don’t forget Benjamin Franklin’s “electrifying” experiment. Unwind after school by listening to stories and making a colorful, homemade kite. Kids of all ages are welcome.

 

Saturday Family Program: Honoring Earth Day

Saturday, April 20, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.  

The original Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970; over the decades it has grown to include billions of people in 192 countries. At Rawlins Library’s Earth Day event, we’ll make plant markers to go with your very own plant starter kit that includes a biodegradable pot, soil, and seeds.

 

Bird Banding with GF&P

Saturday, April 20, 1 p.m.  

What can we learn by banding migratory birds? Wildlife biologist Silka Kempema will tell us and explain the banding process used by the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks. Registration requested by calling 605.773.7421.

 

For the Thrill of It Book Club

Sunday, April 21, 3 p.m.  

The For the Thrill of It book club will read The Quarry Girls by Jess Lourey. Register for this thriller genre reading book club by visiting the front desk at the library or calling 605.773.7421. Must be 18 or older.

 

Makerspace Monday: May the 4th Be With You!

Monday, April 29, 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the SD Room  

Star Wars Day is Saturday, May 4. Rawlins Library is celebrating early with a display of Star Wars books, kid-friendly Star Wars trivia, and a Star Wars themed craft. Kids of all ages are welcome.
