2020 Street Construction Plan

2020_PROJECT MAP

If the 2020 construction season goes according to plan, the City of Pierre will rebuild, resurface or otherwise improve 50 blocks of city street and 7,800 feet of curb.

This week, the City Commission awarded about $1.3 million to Morris, Inc. to handle asphalt paving work. Sharpe Enterprises will handle the curb and gutter work for a little more than $482,000.

“Streets are always a major priority of the City Commission,” said Mayor Steve Harding. “This year, the Commission provided additional resources to extend street preservation tactics.”

The City Commission added an extra $100,000 into the budget this year to allow for more extensive preservation work like scrub sealing, fog sealing and chip sealing.

“These techniques allow us to not only extend the life of our street but also improve more streets during the construction season,” said Harding.

Harding went on to say that it’s really about responsive government.

“The number one issue we hear about from citizens is street improvements. So our team went out and looked for techniques that would allow us to improve more streets during the construction season.”

Street projects throughout the community are planned. However, the most prominent projects, because of traffic flow, will likely be the paving project on East Dakota Ave. and the installation of new water main under Poplar Ave. followed by the rebuilding of Poplar.

The City maintains 80 miles of streets. Each year, City staff assess the streets, in addition to utilities, sidewalks and curbs to prioritize street maintenance and reconstruction projects.
