Commission Approves Boys & Girls Club MOU
In February, the Pierre City Commission agreed to partner with the local Boys and Girls Club to remodel the existing facility. Tonight, the City Commission put its commitment to the remodel in writing.
They voted to approve a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that commits the City to providing $2 million for the expansion and remodel of the Club. The entire project is budgeted at $4.4 million. Capital Area Counseling Services, the parent organization of the Club, will pay $180,000 a year for the next 10 years. And a Community Development Block Grant provided by the State will cover the remaining $770,000 for the project.
The City of Pierre owns the building that houses the Boys and Girls Club and Pierre Mayor Steve Harding says that the City has a responsibility to help maintain the property.
“The building’s mechanical system and roof are at the end of their life; I’m glad we can help provide safe and appropriate space for the Club,” said Harding.
The project includes the demolition of the south addition of the Club. The area that is demolished will be rebuilt to include a second story. This space will include a new kitchen, programming space, and offices.
“This partnership is going to work well,” said Tom Farnsworth, Pierre Parks and Recreation Director. “The City will have the ability to utilize some of the new programming space and utilize the gym outside of the Club’s operating hours.”
Last week, the City Commission agreed to hire a construction manager to oversee the project. The work is scheduled to start next year with a completion date in 2020.
