Fall Seasoned Citizen Programs Announced
The Pierre Recreation Department’s Seasoned Citizen fall programs begin next week.
Now in its seventh year, the Seasoned Citizen program provides options for Pierre’s senior citizens to stay physically, mentally and socially active throughout the year. This season’s program lineup includes Tai Chi, Zumba Gold and Walk with Ease.
Tai Chi is a martial art that involves a series of graceful movements and deep breathing. It is proven to relieve pain and improve balance. Classes are held Mondays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. at the YMCA and on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at the Pierre Senior Center. Depending on schedule, classes cost between $12 and $24 and are free to Senior Center members.
Zumba Gold is inspired by the Latin-dance Zumba workout, but it is designed for seniors, beginners, or those who need modifications. The program builds cardiovascular health by working the muscles of the hips, legs, and arms with dance moves. The class can be done while seated. Classes are held Tuesdays at 11 a.m. at the Pierre Senior Center and Wednesdays at 9 a.m. at the YMCA. Depending on schedule, classes cost between $12 and $24 and are free to Senior Center members.
Walk with Ease
Walk with Ease is designed specifically for people with arthritis, but is appropriate for anyone who wants to increase physical activity. Walk with Ease classes are held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 1 p.m. Class location rotates between outdoor and indoor locations. The Class fee is $10.
Classes run from October through mid-December, with the first class, Tai Chi, beginning on Monday, Oct. 1. Registration is completed on the first day of each class.
